    'La Cité Internationale'

    Lyon, France

    SEM de la cité internationale

    Architect: Renzo Piano Building Workshop

  • 'La Cité Internationale' has been designed as a multi function complex, several buildings has to offer a museum, a movie theater, a casino, offices and housing. It skirts the Rhône river, on a thin but long ground bench between 'Tête d'Or' park and the river. Thus, the whole building has been divided into two ranks of buildings, one turned towards the park, the other one towards the river. The bond comes from a glazed central alley both interior and external space. The global structure follows the curve of the river. The primary structure is composed of stringer beams in steel profiles. They form a box onto which a system of fixing the secondary structure is welded ; the unit stands on tubular posts separated by 11,20 m which include the system of rain drainage. The underlain secondary beams consist of an out of steel profile with variable inertia and form a square screen of 1,40 m with the rafters that support the glazing. The screen printed glass follow the same weave. Where the roof does not cover the whole of space between the buildings, middle height hoods protect this glazed street from the rain.
