    Gabriel Montpied stadium

    Clermont-Ferrand, France

    Ville de Clermont-Ferrand

    Architect: Jacques Kalisz

  • Covering these stands designed to seat 7500 sports fans was no mean feat: the architect had produced a design more akin to a work of civil engineering, with a technical solution developed in the form of a single arch with a span of 150 m. The structure consists of a huge bow beam from which is slung the corrugated metal roof, with its metal ribs that confer rigidity and cladding of profiled sheet steel. The main beam is an assemblage of giant cubes (side app. 6 m) built of hollow tubes and stiffened by steel diagonals that converge on a central node.
