Tollgate barrier at Eprunes
A5 motorway, France
Société des autoroutes Paris-Rhin-Rhône
Architect and engineer: Marc Mimram
Parisian region entrances and exits to the A5 motorway are marked by the passage under a long arched structure at Eprunes in the Brie plain. The huge scale of this tollgate barrier is expressed by the three main arches that stabilise it and appear as a gateway in the landscape. The construction has a steel structure with uprights in the form of palm trees, which lift canted overhangs of 25 m over the toll cabins. They are held in place by a system of braces and guys tied to the arches, which ensure longitudinal stability. The 46 palms are positioned on either side of the toll cabins and carry a dual-curve shelter awning in reinforced polyester fibreglass. The palms are built of sheet steel curved in both the transversal and longitudinal planes. Their construction called for the development of a specific machine-tool by the Viry firm.
